He is primarily known for his critiques of left-wing socialist dictatorships such as the regime of Hugo Chavez, though he certainly does not play partisan only and also goes after human rights violations from right wing governments such as the Russian cabinet of Vladimir Putin and Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.
According to Forbes, Thor Halvorssen comes from a background in the arts, not in political activism. For instance, he has a intense interest in film and has even produced several films. His first collision with the powers that be came about in the late 1980s when Thor organized protest rallies in London, England to rally against apartheid in South Africa.
However, Thor Halvorssen did not become involved in the Human Right’s movement full time until his father, Thor Halvorssen Hellum, during his investigation into drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar, was falsely imprisoned after being framed for terrorism. Whilst in prison Mr. Hellum was savagely tortured, a violation of basic human dignity which propelled the unfortunate man’s son into vigorous social rights activism.
Some time later, his mother was shot by the regime of Hugo Chavez during a peaceable protest, thankfully she survived her wound. This horrible injustice spurred Mr. Halvorssen only further in his endeavors to institute justice and protect civil and human rights across the globe, thus he founded the Human Rights Roundation, which he leads even to this very day.
